History

  • Celtic Cross: This commemorative cross, along with its twin which sits at the opposite end of the canal in Kingston, Ontario, was erected in 2004. Together these monuments represent the thousands of workers and family members who died during the period of construction from 1826 - 1832.

  • Commissariat: Now home to the Bytown Museum, The Commissariat was the storage facility from the time of its construction in 1827 through to the completion of the Rideau Canal.

  • View of locks with Commissariat and Chateau Laurier: This serene view is taken from a spot that has a certain place in Ottawa history. It was here, in 1836, that a group of Shiners set fire to a barge in order to free their leader, Peter Aylen, who was being held under arrest in the Commissariat building on the right.
