  This water-colour painting offers perhaps the best image of the Lay By turning basin which was situated approximately where the Rideau Centre now stands.

  This early photograph dates back to when the open pit, where limestone was mined for the final set of locks, was still plainly visible.

  The original Aylen house still stands in Ottawa's west end. Although its stone walls and metal roof are unique, it hardly looks out of place from its neighbouring homes.
